Researchers at the Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University sent pulses of light carrying quantum information 13 miles through open air between the two…
Researchers led by a Cornell University team have grown the superconducting tantalum films used in quantum-computing chips at substrate temperatures as low as 200 degrees Celsius by switching the gas…
Picture an ant trying to walk a trail while a herd of elephants stampedes down the same path. That is roughly the problem Prem Kumar and his group at Northwestern set themselves, and the ant,…
Every quantum computer that corrects its own errors is running a race against itself. The hardware measures its qubits over and over, thousands of times a second, and each round produces a small…
Every quantum engineer spends their career at war with the same opponent. A qubit holds its delicate state for only so long before energy bleeds away into its surroundings and the information…
Quantum computers have a fragility problem. The quantum states that give them their power are easily disturbed, and a stray bit of noise can scramble a calculation before it finishes. One of the most…
