A rockfall collapsed the roof of a cave near Urzulei, in Sardinia's Ogliastra province. The collapse happened early Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, 2026. It trapped a speleologist about 10 meters below ground while he was exploring the cave, Italian outlets la Repubblica and TGCOM24 reported. As of Sunday night, Oct. 11, 2026, rescuers were still working to reach him and bring him back to the surface.

The man is alive and conscious, rescuers told TGCOM24, in an update later than la Repubblica's earlier, more tentative account. His condition beyond that was not known as of Sunday night, Oct. 11, 2026.

Collapsed rock blocks the cave's entrance, and the surrounding rock is friable, forcing rescuers to clear debris by hand rather than with heavy equipment, la Repubblica reported. TGCOM24 said the man is believed to be buried under additional debris beyond the initial collapse.

More than 30 technicians from Italy's national alpine and speleological rescue corps, including doctors and extraction specialists, were at the site. Firefighters and a helicopter rescue crew backed them, TGCOM24 reported. An advanced command post coordinated the response, combining the Tortolì fire brigade detachment, the Nuoro command's Alpine-river speleological teams and 16 USAR Medium search-and-rescue units flown in by the Italian Air Force from Decimomannu, according to both outlets.
