Floods From Vance's Remnants Strike Guaymas and Empalme, Sonora, Sweeping Away Vehicles

Heavy rain from the remnants of Tropical Storm Vance flooded Guaymas and Empalme, in the Mexican state of Sonora, on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, killing two men whose car was swept away by the current, La Jornada and Infobae reported. The storm, Vance, had already dissipated over the eastern Pacific before its remnants reached Sonora.
La Jornada said the men's car was swept into a flooded stream and became trapped beneath a bridge in central Guaymas, and identified them as Juan José Carbadillo, 54, a ride-hailing driver, and Jesús Alberto Meléndez. Infobae gave a different account of the location, placing the incident in the Misión del Sol neighborhood and saying the car was swept away by a swollen arroyo.
Infobae said about 120 millimeters of rain fell on Guaymas in 45 minutes, roughly three times the 40 millimeters authorities had initially forecast for a 12-hour span. Flooding also reached about 10 centimeters inside five homes in the colonia Mirador, the outlet said, and three vehicles were swept away by the floodwaters citywide. Six high-voltage power poles were affected. La Jornada said the rain began around 4 a.m. and flooded several other parts of the city.
Flooding also affected Empalme, where municipal, state and federal authorities mounted an emergency response, La Jornada reported.
