Storm Kills Man in Rhodes, Cuts Road in Evia, Greece
A 62-year-old man died in Rhodes, Greece, on Oct. 14, 2026, when the car he was in was swept into the sea during a storm, Greek outlets Protothema, Efimerida ton Syntakton and ERT News reported. Coast Guard personnel recovered his body from the water off Stegna beach in Archangelos, on the island's east coast, after the vehicle was swept away by floodwater.
A total of four vehicles were swept into the sea in the area, with no other injuries reported from the remaining three, Protothema and ERT News said. Early reports had put the dead man's age at 25; Efimerida ton Syntakton reported that local media later corrected this to 62. NeaKriti identified him as Evangelos Giomliakis and reported that he had worked in accounting and as a guard at a Rhodes hotel for the past four years. He had formally retired in July but stayed on through the end of the tourist season, and was the father of two adult children. An ambulance took him to a nearby health center, where his death was confirmed, ERT News reported.
Protothema cited the National Observatory of Athens' meteo.gr network, which recorded 202 millimeters of rain on Rhodes between 6:30 a.m. and 12:50 p.m., and 264 millimeters since the start of the day through 12:50 p.m.
A section of road between Archangelos and Malona closed after a large rock fell onto the roadway, Protothema reported. On Evia, floodwater from the Kireas River eroded the roadbed on the Prokopi-Mantoudi road axis at two points; at one of them the gap reached an estimated 30 meters, cutting off that stretch of road, ERT News reported.
Greece's national weather service, EMY, raised its warning to Red — the top of its four-level awareness scale, Extreme — for the East Sterea and Evvoia region on Oct. 13, 2026, a day before the same storm reached Rhodes and cut the Evia road. Rhodes town's mayor, Alexandros Koliadis, described the situation on the island as particularly serious, Protothema reported.
