Seismogram recording of the M5.1 Tanzania earthquake
The magnitude 5.1 earthquake recorded at Kilima Mbogo, Kenya, about 600 km away; the first waves arrived one minute after it struck.Data: USGS Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory / Global Seismographic Network (IU), via EarthScope, CC BY 4.0

As of 16:45 UTC on Nov. 5, 2026, the U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck 19 kilometers northwest of Masumbwe, Tanzania, at 12:22 p.m. local time (09:22 UTC) on Nov. 5, 2026, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

As of that same update, eighteen people had reported feeling the quake to USGS, which calculates a community-determined intensity of 5.3 from those reports.

Quakes this size are not routine here. As of that same update, a station baseline computed from the USGS catalog finds that quakes of about this size or larger within 300 kilometers of this epicenter have occurred about 0.5 times a year over the past 30 years, roughly once every two years.
