Flash Flooding Swamps Oklahoma City Streets as Storms Rake the Southern Plains
Flash Flood, Flood and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings covered five Southern Plains states for eight hours beginning at 06:33 UTC Oct. 14, 2026: Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas and Missouri. The outbreak's first Flash Flood Warning, from the National Weather Service, covered Brewster and Presidio counties in West Texas, and the agency kept warnings active without a break across at least 32 counties in the five states. In the Oklahoma City area, thunderstorms dropped 3 to 6 inches of rain and produced what the agency called life-threatening flash flooding.
The agency's office in Norman, Oklahoma, extended its Flash Flood Warning for central Oklahoma until 1 p.m. CDT, after broadcast media reported widespread flash flooding in the Oklahoma City metro area. "Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly," the office said. The warning covered life-threatening flooding of creeks, streams, roads and underpasses, with up to 3 more inches of rain possible in the warned area. It named Oklahoma City and 19 other communities in the metro area.
Flash Flood, Flood and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings also covered additional counties through the morning: western and central Oklahoma, West Texas, the Texas Panhandle, southeastern New Mexico, south-central Kansas and southwestern Missouri.
