NWS Confirms EF2 Tornado Struck Candor, North Carolina, Collapsing Community Center Walls

The National Weather Service's office in Raleigh, North Carolina (NWS Raleigh), confirmed an EF2 tornado near Candor on Oct. 11, 2026. The tornado's peak winds reached 115 mph, in one of three damage surveys the office issued Oct. 13, 2026. Two more tornadoes, both rated EF1, touched down the same day near Jordan Lake and Carpenter in North Carolina. None of the three caused injuries or fatalities, the office said.
In Candor, in Montgomery County, the tornado tracked northeast over a path 0.38 miles long and up to 125 yards wide, snapping trees and lifting a large section of roofing from a nearby home. NWS Raleigh said a community center suffered the heaviest damage, with three of its exterior walls collapsing, consistent with damage at the high end of EF1 or the low end of EF2.
The three new surveys follow NWS Raleigh's confirmation of the outbreak's first EF2s, a tornado that destroyed a barn elsewhere in North Carolina.
A second survey from NWS Raleigh confirmed an EF1 tornado over Jordan Lake in Chatham County. With peak winds of 107 mph, the tornado tracked 1.07 miles, snapping numerous trees before lifting over the lake's far shore. A third survey from NWS Raleigh confirmed an EF1 tornado in Wake County near Carpenter, with peak winds of 100 mph over a 0.37-mile path. The office said no structural damage was found, with the strongest winds apparently confined to treetops.
