Microsoft and NVIDIA Open Preorders for Laptops Built to Run AI Models Without the Cloud

NVIDIA and Microsoft opened preorders on Oct. 7, 2026, for Windows laptops built on NVIDIA's RTX Spark chip, which combines a processor and a graphics chip on a single part. NVIDIA says the laptops will be available Oct. 16, 2026, and Microsoft has priced its own Surface Laptop Ultra from $2,599. None has shipped.
What the two companies are selling is where the AI model runs. NVIDIA's announcement says RTX Spark carries up to 128 GB of memory shared between its processor and its graphics, enough to run a 125-billion-parameter model on the laptop itself, with no cloud service metering its use and no data leaving the machine. Those are the company's own figures, and no independent measurement of the part has been published.
Microsoft said its preorders run through its own store and other retailers, and that the laptop will run models that do not fit on a traditional machine. Its own footnote qualifies the memory figure: that is the whole system's memory, divided as needed between the processor and the graphics, and the graphics can address less than all of it. NVIDIA named eight manufacturers building systems on the chip: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI and Gigabyte. Their designs range from slim laptops to small desktops.
NVIDIA says the desktop versions go on sale in November 2026. Microsoft's Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a small desktop for developers, is open for preorder at $5,999 and ships that month. The two companies also previewed a larger desktop system, NVIDIA DGX Station for Windows, for which no price or release date was announced.
