Subtropical Storm Josephine Forms off Massachusetts, Moving Away From US

The National Hurricane Center named Subtropical Storm Josephine on Oct. 21, 2026, locating it about 265 mi (425 km) south of Nantucket, Massachusetts. In its Advisory Number 1, the agency put the storm's maximum sustained winds at 65 mph (100 km/h) and its minimum central pressure at 990 mb (29.24 inches), about 585 mi (940 km) southwest of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The storm was moving north at 6 mph (9 km/h).
There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. On the forecast track, Josephine should turn northeastward by Thursday, Oct. 22, moving away from the United States and remaining south of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
Gale-force wind gusts are possible along portions of the northeastern United States coast through Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, the agency said. Minor to locally moderate coastal flooding is ongoing along portions of the U.S. Mid-Atlantic coast and is expected to continue through the rest of the week around times of high tide. Large swells generated by Josephine are affecting much of the eastern seaboard of the United States and portions of Atlantic Canada, which the NHC said are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
