A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck 76 kilometers northeast of Ozernovskiy, on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, at 3:35 a.m. UTC on Oct. 16, 2026, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). USGS put the quake's depth at 135 kilometers.

USGS's ShakeMap rates the strongest shaking at intensity V, "moderate." The agency's own population-exposure model found nobody in the next band up, intensity VI, "strong," and put about 14,000 people inside the moderate-shaking zone. Being that deep, the quake's energy had far to travel before reaching the surface, one reason the shaking that reached the ground stayed moderate despite the quake's size. USGS's loss-estimate model said: "There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage."

No casualties or damage had been reported as of 7 a.m. UTC on Oct. 16, 2026.
